The piracy tracking site TorrentFreak reports the Ryan Reynolds action-comedy Deadpool was the most pirated film of 2016. Not surprising when you consider Deadpool was not handed a release slot in China, the world’s second-largest movie market. DC Film’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice came in second on the list, followed by Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War in third place.
The first trailer for the new crime thriller Stray Bullets has debuted. The low-budget film was written, directed and edited by first-time feature helmer Jack Fessenden. The 17-year-old Fessenden, who also stars in the film, composed its score, and is among the movie’s credited chefs, is the son of indie horror filmmaker and character actor Larry Fessenden.
The Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki is back with The Other Side of Hope (Toivon tuolla puolen), the second installment in his trilogy focusing on port cities.
The Le Havre‘s follow-up tells the story of a poker-playing restauranteur and former travelling salesman Wikström (Sakari Kuosmanen) and a Syrian refugee Khaled (Sherwan Haji) crossing paths while the last attempts to seek asylum in Helsinski.
Disney-Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: Episode VIII topped Fandango‘s annual survey of the coming year’s most anticipated movies. In second place is Disney and Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 with Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast making up the top 3 for 2017.
Outside of Disney movies, Warner Bros.’ Wonder Woman and Sony-Marvel’s origins story Spider-Man: Homecoming round out the top five.
The Weinstein Company has released a new trailer for Leap! (aka Ballerina), the French-Canadian CG animated feature which opens in select U.S. theaters on March 3, 2017.
Directed by Eric Summer and Éric Warin, from a script by Carole Noble and Laurent Zeitoun, the story is set in Belle Époque Paris and follows a plucky young girl who dreams of becoming a ballet dancer, and her friend with ambitions to become a famous inventor.
Hugh Jackman shared on social media the new Logan poster, ahead of the new trailer reportedly coming early in January 2017.
20th Century Fox hired James Mangold to handle Jackman’s last turn as the iconic Marvel mutant, which also features Patrick Stewart as Professor Charles Xavier, Richard E. Grant, Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant, Elizabeth Rodriguez and the young Dafne Keen as the female Wolverine clone X-23.
