Weekend Box Office: ‘Happy Death Day’ Opens at #1

Universal and Blumhouse’s Happy Death Day topped the weekend box office with a strong $26.5 million, easily dethroning Blade Runner 2049, which dropped to second place with $15.1 million in its second frame.

Made for a mere $4.8 million, the “Groundhog Day”-like horror film directed by Christopher Landon and rated PG-13 follows the success of Blumhouse’s other 2017 hits, “Get Out” and “Split”. 

The Tense First Trailer for ‘New Mutants’ Arrives

Fox has released the first teaser trailer for the new X-Men movie, titled X-Men: The New Mutants, based on the spin-off comic series about a group of young mutant students forced into a secret facility.

Directed by Josh Boone from the screenplay written by Kante Gwaltney, Boone, Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, The New Mutants is set to star Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik, Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton as Cannonball, Henry Zaga as Sunspot, Blu Hunt as Mirage and Alice Braga as Cecilia Reyes.

IFC Films has released the official trailer for a small-town suspense thriller Sweet Virginia, which premiered at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival.

Directed by Jamie M. Dagg from a script by Benjamin and Paul China, the film stars Jon Bernthal as a scowling motel manager who buddies up to a murderous drifter (Christopher Abbott) in a small Alaskan community marred by a series of murders.
