Alfonso Cuaron in Talks to Direct FANTASTIC BEASTS

Gravity filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron is readying a return to the Harry Potter franchise — The Prisoner of Azkaban helmer is “deep in talks” to direct Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Warner Bros. Pictures had set a November 18th, 2016 release date for the film last week.

The inclusion of Cuaron would peak my interest somewhat — last year’s Academy Award darling Gravity took home 7 statues on the big night, plus he made the best movie of the HP saga.

Fantastic Beasts movie is set 70 years before the Potter films and follows adventurer Newt Scamander; the script was written by author JK Rowling herself, and Warners are hoping to have it in theaters by Christmas 2016.

If a deal is finalized, Cuaron won’t only be reunited with Rowling, but also with producer David Heyman, who produced all seven of the HP films in addition to Gravity.

The project is the first in a planned trilogy.

Word comes via Nikki Finke who has been a reliable source for big Hollywood news over the years.
