Happy 4th! The million dollar question is how can you make a Jimi Hendrix movie with none of his music? The answer given via John Ridley‘s biopic Jimi: All is By My Side is a possible solution.

The movie marks feature directorial debut for 12 Years a Slave screenwriter Ridley.  André Benjamin aka Andre 3000 (one-half of the hip-hop duo OutKast) stars as the legendary rocker in the film forced to stay focused on his prefame days because they didn’t have access to any of his songs.

All is By My Side looks to explore not only Hendrix’s rise to fame – a very specific time in Hendrix’s life from 1966-1967 as an unknown backup guitarist playing New York’s Cheetah Club – but his struggles against the prevailing social stigmas of the day.

Co-starring Imogen Poots, Hayley Atwell, Burn Gorman and Ruth Negga, the film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival to strong notices last year and opens in the US on September 26th.

Check out Benjamin’s impressive transformation into the guitar legend. One of my favorite  is:

“For me, it’s colors. I want people to feel the same way I see it,”

the rapper, as Hendrix, shares in a voiceover (while offering a smile that any Hendrix fan would recognize).

Described by writer-director John Ridley (12 Years a Slave) as one of the most rarely told stories in rock history, “All Is By My Side” charts just over a year in a man’s life. The year he blossomed and became Jimi Hendrix. The year he spent as a young musician trying to make it on the streets and in the clubs of London, England. The lovers, friends, and musical collaborators, who helped him get there. Starring Andre Benjamin in an electrifying performance as Hendrix, “All Is By My Side” also features a stand out supporting cast including Hayley Atwell, Imogen Poots, and Ruth Negga.
