Andre 3000 in JIMI: ALL IS BY MY SIDE

By the look of things, Andre 3000 did Jimi good in a biopic of ground-breaking rock legend Jimi Hendrix called Jimi: All Is by My Side.

Andre Benjamin aka Andre 3000 (one half of the great hip-hop duo OutKast) is a great pick for the film described by writer/director John Ridley as one of the most rarely told stories in rock history.

Ridley, fresh off an Oscar win for 12 Years A Slave, chronicles just over a year in a man’s life that took Hendrix from backup guitarist in New York City to fame in the London music scene due to his friendship with Keith Richards’ girlfriend Linda Keith (Imogen Poots).

Unfortunately, don’t expect any of the classic rocker’s landmark hits, however, as the late Hendrix’s family – which keeps a tight reign on classic songs such as “Purple Haze”, “Foxy Lady”, and “Hey Joe” – denied Ridley the use of any original music.

The film also features a supporting cast including Hayley Atwell and Ruth Negga.

The long-awaited Jimi Hendrix biopic premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last fall and finally opens in the US on June 13th and in the UK from August 8th.

The big question is just how successful Jimi Hendrix movie could be with no Jimi Hendrix music.
