A Live-Action BARBIE Movie in the Works

Sony Pictures is partnering with Mattel for a live-action comedy based on the 50-year-old Barbie toyline, which the studio hopes will kick off a new franchise.

Sex and the City writer, Jenny Bicks, has been brought on board to pen the script for producers Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald (Men in Black).

The studio will be looking for an as-yet unknown young actress to play the lead, and young cast to play Ken and Barbie’s best friend, Skipper.

The film that is said to be a contemporary tale that “allows the character Barbie to use her personal and professional skills to step into the lives of others and improve them, almost like a modern day Mary Poppins.”

Word is that the film’s development is moving quickly.

Mattel and Sony are also collaborating on a bigscreen adaptation of Mattel’s popular action figure line, Master of the Universe, and this just sweetens their relationship.

Only time can tell if it is possible to make another great film (The LEGO Movie) out of material that has zero backstory or mythology.
