Benicio Del Toro Eyed for STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII Main Villain Role
Actor Benicio Del Toro reportedly has the offer to play the lead villain in Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII.
One of the most successful Hispanic actors recently starred as The Collector in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, and was also being courted by J.J. Abrams back in 2011 to play the villain in what became Star Trek Into Darkness. So there’s no doubt he’s no stranger to science fiction, but whether or not he’ll accept the role remains to be seen. It’s not yet known if he will be back for Guardians of the Galaxy 2.
Joaquin Phoenix is also said to be a contender, according to Variety. Moreover, Deadline speculates that the early news of this role could mean one of the villains from Star Wars: The Force Awakens — Domhnall Gleeson’s General Hux, Gwendolyn Christie’s Captain Phasma, Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren — doesn’t make to the end of the movie (though nothing’s been confirmed, of course).
The eight installment is slated for release on May 26, 2017, which means that the next few months are going to be filled with big casting news. Meanwhile, The Force Awakens will debut in theaters on December 18. For now I’ll assume that Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Oscar Isaac will all be back.
Del Toro’s next film is Sicario. Love his work. I think he’d fit in the Star Wars universe perfectly, don’t you agree?
