Concept Art for Ruairi Robinson’s Live-Action AKIRA

Akira-CArt3-Featured

This Akira concept art from fledgling director Ruairi Robinson art looks awesome. There are a couple of character designs for Keneda and Tetsuo with a Pirelli T shirt that make me think of Chris Evans and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a great mix for the film.

Don’t get me wrong, personally I have nothing against Asian actors for the role either. Moreover, I believe that it might have worked if they had not Americanized it. The story is just too rooted in Japanese culture.

Originally intended to be produced by Leonardo Di Caprio‘s Appian Way and Warner Brothers as a two feature project (2009), the film ran into development hell with rumors of script problems, incredibly tight budget restrictions and other issues.

Robinson – best known for 2013’s Last Days on Mars – had several pieces of concept art done for the film along with some storyboards, and some of that art has been posted on his website.

Below you can watch a couple of them (via Imgur).
