Daniel Bruhl Confirms Playing Baron Zemo in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

Captain America: Civil War

Back in November, we learned that Daniel Bruhl had joined the cast of Captain America: Civil War. Five months later, the Spanish-German actor has finally confirmed that he will play Baron Zemo in the movie.

“I think I can tell you that without being thrown into Marvel prison,” he told The Independent. “For the first few days I’ll walk around like a little boy, just amazed by the megalomania of it. It’s such a huge project. We could do 20 films with the budget.”

The original Baron Zemo was Heinrich Zemo, a prominent Nazi scientist who perished in a battle against Captain America in World War II. Brühl is playing Helmut Zemo, son of Heinrich, who wants to avenge his father’s death. He’s a somewhat ambiguous villain who poses as a hero when it suits him, which could add an interesting wrinkle to the story.

In the comics, Helmut Zemo plays both sides during the Civil War. Zemo recruits villains to the pro-registration side, at the request of Iron Man, but he also helps Captain America break out of prison. (via /Film)

Baron Zemo won’t be the only villain Cap has to contend with in the new film, as Frank Grillo recently teased his previously-announced return to the fold as Brock Rumlow a.k.a. Crossbones.

Captain America: Civil War starts shooting today in Atlanta, Berlin and Puerto Rico for a release on May 6, 2016. Set to be directed once again by the Russo brothers, the film will also star Chris Evans as Captain America, Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Anthony Mackie as The Falcon, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch, Chadwick Boseman in his MCU debut as Black Panther, and the brand-new Spider-Man, of course.

This flick is about Captain America leading one team vs Iron Man leading another. Cap is for Heroes freedom to remain with secret identities. Iron Man is with the government and wants powered beings to be registered and have their identities known. It’s practically a Heroes vs Heroes movie.
