Director Peyton Reed in Talks to Return for ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’

Marvel's Comic Book Movie

THR brings word that Ant-Man director Peyton Reed is in talks with Marvel Studios to return for the 2018 sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp, which will feature Evangeline Lilly‘s Hope van Dyne/Wasp in an expanded role (as teased in the end credits of the first film).

If a deal closes, he would also join cast members Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas, who are expected to return, too, for more diminutive superhero shenanigans. I’m happy Marvel will be bringing back the continuity at least with the Ant-Man films.

The first movie recently did very well in China (they like smaller things over there), on top of its strong showing stateside, despite the troubled production and the mixed feelings which were brought up Edgar Wright‘s exit. All things considered, this comic book movie turned out pretty well.

No screenwriters have yet been attached to the follow-up, but don’t expect Wright and Joe Cornish to come back for the sequel. Whoever got hired, he really got to improve the writing — nothing happens for half the original movie, for God’s sake. The narrative trajectory of Ant-Man, on the other hand, is more clever than even Avengers: Age of Ultron or Iron Man 3.

Ant-Man and the Wasp is scheduled for release on July 6, 2018.
