First Red Band Trailer for THE GAMBLER, Starring Mark Wahlberg

Paramount UK has released the first red band trailer for director Rupert Wyatt’s loose remake of the 1974 classic The Gambler, starring Mark Wahlberg.

Yeah, John Goodman says “F*ck You!” a lot and Wahlberg knows when to hold ’em, knows when to f*ck you too, and judging by this first teaser for the film, both actors seem to be chewing up nicely a script from The Departed’s William Monahan.

In development since at least 2011, the flick co-stars Brie Larson, Michael K. Williams and Jessica Lange, and it opens in limited release on December 19 before expanding on January 1.

The original 1975 pic, based on the short novel by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, starred James Caan as a NY English professor, named Alex Freed, who inspired his student, but also had a gambling addiction.

Those are some big shoes for Marky Mark to fill!

Jim Bennett (Academy Award®-nominee Mark Wahlberg) is a risk taker. Both an English professor and a high-stakes gambler, Bennett bets it all when he borrows from a gangster (Michael Kenneth Williams) and offers his own life as collateral. Always one step ahead, Bennett pits his creditor against the operator of a gambling ring (Alvin Ing) and leaves his dysfunctional relationship with his wealthy mother (Academy Award®-winner Jessica Lange) in his wake. He plays both sides, immersing himself in an illicit, underground world while garnering the attention of Frank (John Goodman), a loan shark with a paternal interest in Bennett’s future. As his relationship with a student (Brie Larson) deepens, Bennett must take the ultimate risk for a second chance…
