First Trailer for Kumail Nanjiani’s Sundance Hit ‘The Big Sick’

Amazon Studios and Lionsgate have unveiled the first trailer for the Sundance hit The Big Sick, a romantic comedy written by Kumail Nanjiani and his real life wife Emily V. Gordon, which tells the semi-autobiographical story of their relationship.

Directed by Michael Showalter, the film tells the story of a Pakistan-born aspiring comedian who connects with a grad student after one of his standup sets. Nanjiani plays a version of himself, while Zoe Kazan plays Emily. Holly Hunter and Ray Romano co-star as her parents.

The Judd Apatow-produced feature also stars comedians Aidy Bryant, Bo Burnham and Kurt Braunohler as Kumail’s fellow stand-up comrades. Check out the Big Sick trailer below.

The Big Sick tells the story of Pakistan-born aspiring comedian Kumail (Nanjiani), who connects with grad student Emily (Kazan) after one of his standup sets. However, what they thought would be just a one-night stand blossoms into the real thing, which complicates the life that is expected of Kumail by his traditional Muslim parents. When Emily is beset with a mystery illness, it forces Kumail to navigate the medical crisis with her parents, Beth and Terry (Holly Hunter and Ray Romano) who he’s never met, while dealing with the emotional tug-of-war between his family and his heart. “The Big Sick” is directed by Michael Showalter (Hello My Name is Doris) and producer by Judd Apatow and Barry Mendel.

The R-rated relationship dramedy – sold for $12M to Amazon Studios and Amazon, hits limited theaters on June 23rd and expands wide on July 14th.
