First Trailer for MLK Biopic SELMA Starring David Oyelowo, Oprah Winfrey

The first trailer for director Ava DuVernay’s biopic Selma finally marches in. An Oscar sleeper for multiple categories, stars David Oyelowo (Interstellar) as Martin Luther King Jr.

Surprise, surprise, Oprah Winfrey is involved. We catch just a few glimpses of her in the trailer, but in addition to producing the film about Dr. King’s historic march, Oprah co-stars as Annie Lee Cooper, the civil rights activist best known for punching a Selma police officer in the jaw.

“SELMA” is the story of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s historic struggle to secure voting rights for all people – a dangerous and terrifying campaign that culminated with the epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, and led to President Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The film’s release will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the landmark legislation.

The film opens December 25 in select cities, expanding January 9, and co-stars Tom Wilkinson as Lyndon Baines Johnson, Carmen Ejogo as Coretta Scott King, Andre Holland as Andrew Young, Omar J. Dorsey as James Orange, Alessandro Nivola as John Doar, Dylan Baker as J. Edgar Hoover, Giovanni Ribisi as Lee White, Tessa Thompson as Diane Nash, Colman Domingo as Ralph Abernathy, Stephen Root as Al Lingo, Jeremy Strong as James Reeb, with Tim Roth as George Wallace, respectively.

In addition, AFI Fest has announced that 30 minutes of Selma will screen on Tuesday, Nov. 11.

Watch the tense first trailer.

Oyelowo had to gain some weight for the role. I like that it is easy to tell who the actors playing. I hope the movie is good like this trailer. Check out the teaser poster below.
