First Trailer for Sofia Coppola’s ‘The Beguiled’
Focus Features has released the first trailer for Sofia Coppola‘s period drama The Beguiled starring Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst and Colin Farrell.
A remake of the 1971 drama starring Clint Eastwood is told from the perspective of the female characters. Based on Thomas P. Cullinan’s 1966 Southern Gothic novel, this is actually more a second adaptation of the novel than a flat-out remake of the Don Siegel film.
The Beguiled also stars Elle Fanning, Oona Laurence and Angourie Rice, and takes place at an isolated all-girls’ school in Civil War-era Virginia where the girls take in a wounded Union soldier. But his presence stirs up a yarn of “seduction and jealousy.”
The film opens in theaters on June 23, 2017. Check out the first trailer below.
“I haven’t really done a genre film. It was fun to figure out how to approach that but still [keep the film] in my style, and to have this kind of beautiful, dreamy world that I like — but with a plot! The main crux of the story is about the dynamics between a group of women all stuck together, and then also the power shifts between men and women. So for me, it’s very universal, but it’s in this exotic setting of the Southern gentility.” (S. Coppola)
