First Trailer for ‘The Keeping Room’ Western with Brit Marling & Hailee Steinfeld

Brit Marling Western

Drafthouse Films has released the first trailer for Daniel Barber’s The Keeping Room, a new feminist western starring Brit Marling, Hailee Steinfeld, and Muna Otaru.

The upcoming Civil War-era drama sees a household of Southern women left without the company of men during the last days of the war. Sam Worthington and Kyle Soller co-star.

Based on Julia Hart‘s revered 2012 Black List screenplay, and shot by German cinematographer Martin Ruhe (Control), The Keeping Room premiered at TIFF last year and will open on September 25th.

Watch the first official trailer for Barber’s (Harry Brown) another gritty drama, this time “injected with themes of sexism and race.”

Looks like an homage to the old-school tension with a pro-fem twist. I’ll check it out one day.

Brit Marling Western

In this radically reimagined American Western set towards the end of the Civil War, Southerner Augusta (Marling) encounters two renegade, drunken soldiers (Worthington) who are on a mission of pillage and violence. After escaping an attempted assault, Augusta races back to the isolated farmhouse that she shares with her sister Louise (Steinfeld) and their female slave Mad (newcomer Muna Otaru.) When the pair of soldiers track Augusta down intent on exacting revenge, the trio of women are forced to take up arms to fend off their assailants, finding ways to resourcefully defend their home––and themselves––as the escalating attacks become more unpredictable and relentless.
