Full Trailer for MR. HOLMES

Sir Ian McKellen

Entertainment One has released a full trailer for Mr. Holmes, the latest effort between Sir Ian McKellen and director Bill Condon (Gods and Monsters), which sees an aging and retired Sherlock Holmes opposite fellow Academy Award-nominee Laura Linney (Kinsey).

The upcoming film, based on the novel “A Slight Trick of the Mind” by Mitch Cullin, takes place in 1947, where Holmes is now living with his housekeeper (Linney) and her amateur-sleuthing son (newcomer Milo Parker).

Mr. Holmes opens in the U.K. on June 19th and July 17th in the U.S., and also stars Hattie Morahan, Patrick Kennedy, Hiroyuki Sanada, Roger Allam, Collin Starkey, Philip Davis, and Frances de la Tour.

Watch the excellent trailer for the film after the jump. Feels like an inspired take on the Holmes character so far. And a great actor in Sir McKellen to boot.

The film was adapted for the screen by Jeffrey Hatcher (The Duchess, Stage Beauty) and begins in 1947 when an aging Holmes returns from Japan, where, in search of a plant with powerful restorative qualities, he has witnessed the devastation of nuclear warfare. Now in his remote seaside farmhouse Holmes faces the end of his days tending to his bees with only the company of his housekeeper (Laura Linney) and her young son, Roger. Grappling with the diminishing powers of his mind, Holmes comes to rely upon the boy as he revisits an unsolved case which forced him into retirement, and searches for answers to the mysteries of life and love – before it’s too late.
