Universal Pictures has released the first Get on Up trailer and pictures from the upcoming James Brown biopic, and it feels good. Starring Chadwick Boseman (42) the cradle-to-grave biopic traces James’ journey from poor street kid to the Godfather of Soul.

Directed by Tate Taylor (The Help) from a script penned by Jez and John-Henry Butterworth (Fair Game) with Steven Baigelman (Feeling Minnesota), the film takes a look inside the music, moves and moods of Brown,  taking audiences on the journey from a young God-fearing man in the 1940s to the crazed PCP-addled gun-shooting rabble-rouser of the 1980s.

Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Nelsan Ellis, Lennie James, Tika Sumpter, Jill Scott, and Dan Aykroyd also star in the film produced by Brian Grazer and Mick Jagger.

Biopic of the “hardest working man in show business”, known and loved by manly simply as James Brown, debuts in theaters on August 1st.
