‘Guardians 2’ Casts ‘Oldboy’ Actress; McConaughey Passes on Villain Role

Update: French actress Pom Klementieff will reportedly be playing the superhero Mantis, a half-Vietnamese half-German who studied with the alien Priests of Pama.

Marvel Studios is on a winning streak, so they went after the big star for their upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but couldn’t land him. The studio and James Gunn wanted Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey to play the film’s villain, but he turned down the role.

A similar thing happened when Marvel had gone to Joaquin Phoenix for Doctor Strange role, but the actor decided to pass on the project as well.

I had no idea McConaughey was close to being this film, but having a great actor would just ruin the movie. The trick is not to get discouraged so the studio moves on steadily without him and conducted a wide search for a mystery role which reportedly called for an Asian actress.

Yeah, relative unknown Pom Klementieff (Spike Lee‘s Oldboy remake) has snagged a mystery role in Marvel’s upcoming outer space adventure, joining Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, and along with the voices of Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel as Rocket and Groot. The studio will continue the hunt for an actor to take on the villain role in the superhero sequel, whatever it is.

Sequel's Release Date

Guardians 2 begins in early 2016 and is also expected to bring back Karen Gillan as Nebula, Michael Rooker as Yondu, and Benicio Del Toro as the Collector, while Lee Pace will not return as bad guy Ronan. The movie hits theaters on May 5, 2017.
