Gugu Mbatha-Raw Reportedly Cast in ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’

Raw Beyond The Lights

Collider is reporting that Beyond the Lights star Gugu Mbatha-Raw is joining the cast of Rian Johnson‘s Star Wars: Episode VIII in an unspecified role.

Tonight, we can exclusively report that Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Beyond the Lights) is joining the cast. While negotiations can always break down and nothing is official until Disney announces it, we feel confident in our reporting.”

Previously, it was reported that Jane the Virgin‘s Gina Rodriguez, Orphan Black‘s Tatiana Maslany and Me and Earl and the Dying Girl‘s Olivia Cooke were on the shortlist for one of the female leads in Johnson’s Star Wars film, but now it appears that Mbatha-Raw is also in contention for this role. Or there may be two significant female roles in the movie?

All I know is that John Boyega will play an important role in the film which will also include Benicio del Toro, although it remains unclear if he’s the villain.

Gugu,32, can next be seen in Will Smith‘s NFL drama Concussion, and she also has a role in 2017’s live-action Beauty and the Beast. Glad to see her profile on the rise. Hopefully, it won’t be some CGI cr*p hiding her.

Elsewhere, speaking to The Costco Connection, Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy revealed that the new trilogy starting with Star Wars: The Force Awakens are pretty straight forward spin-offs that pick up the old narrative from 1983’s Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi:

The Saga films focus on the Skywalker family saga,” she said. “The stories follow a linear narrative that connects to the previous six films. The ‘Force Awakens’ follows ‘Return of the Jedi’ and continues that generational story. ‘The Anthology’ films [like “Rogue One” and the Han Solo spin-off] offer opportunities to explore fresh characters, new storylines and a variety of genres inside the Star Wars universe.”

Episode VIII will arrive in theaters May 26, 2017.
