Here’s the Official Trailer for Long Delayed ‘Mary Magdalene’ Biopic

The Biblical Drama

IFC Films has released the final trailer for the biblical drama Mary Magdalene, starring Rooney Mara as the titular religious figure and Joaquin Phoenix as her confidant, Jesus Christ.

Directed by Garth Davis and written by Helen Edmundson and Philippa Goslett, the retelling of the biblical story of these two could be taken as a period love story. The film also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as Peter.

Mary Magdalene was initially poised to be released last March, but ahead of filing for bankruptcy, The Weinstein Company sold it to IFC who agreed to release it in U.S. theaters just in time for this Easter holiday.

The Biblical Drama

Mary Magdalene is an authentic and humanistic portrait of one of the most enigmatic and misunderstood spiritual figures in history. The biblical biopic tells the story of Mary (Rooney Mara), a young woman in search of a new way of living. Constricted by the hierarchies of the day, Mary defies her traditional family to join a new social movement led by the charismatic Jesus of Nazareth (Joaquin Phoenix). She soon finds a place for herself within the movement and at the heart of a journey that will lead to Jerusalem.
