Hot on the heels of The Conjuring 2 delay, New Line Cinema reveals that James Wan will return to direct the upcoming horror sequel, with shooting to begin next summer.

Well, it’s a pretty good reason for the delay. Wan is wrapping up on Universal Pictures’ franchise sequel Fast & Furious 7, and it’s been recently rumored that he’s reuniting with original Saw screenwriter Leigh Whannell for another Saw film, which Lionsgate is hoping to take to Comic-Con in 2016.

It’s so great to hear that studios are waiting for the filmmakers to become available in order to continue pursuing profitable properties. My faith in Hollywood has been (somewhat) restored.

“It was during the editing of Fast & Furious 7 that my brain started sparking ideas for The Conjuring sequel. Taking a break from horror has allowed me to be creatively rejuvenated. I’m excited to tell the story of the next case-file of Ed & Lorraine Warren and expand on this world we’ve created,“

Wan said. The Conjuring was a really personal project for him.

It is believed that the story of The Conjuring 2 will follow the next case file of the real-life paranormal investigator husband and wife team of Ed and Lorrain Warren, played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. The film features a screenplay by Chad and Carey Hayes.

Last night Warner Bros. pushed back the film’s release from October 23, 2015 to an undisclosed 2016 date. Wan also signed on with New Line to

“develop and produce modest budget films in the science fiction, horror, and comedy genres through his Atomic Monster production banner.”

Considering the spin-off Annabelle didn’t work as well without him behind the camera, it’s just awesome. And even if The Conjuring 2 turns out to be Wan’s latest foray into the haunted house genre, this gives ample opportunity to him to have his hands in several different genre projects at once.
