Jean-Marc Vallee to Direct Janis Joplin Biopic Starring Amy Adams

Janis Joplin Biopic

Dallas Buyers Club director Jean-Marc Vallee would pull the best from Amy Adams in the long-gestating Janis Joplin biopic as he helped take both Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto to their Oscars.

I can’t really picture the super-attractive Adams as the average-looking Joplin. Would be awesome if I could only imagine her with Joplin’s voice, much less  she’s already 13 years older than Joplin was when she died. But if she pulls it off the Oscar is hers tho.

In development since at least 2010, the film scripted by Ron and Theresa Terry is untitled at the moment.  At one point, it was being called Get It While You Can after Joplin’s iconic cover version of the Howard Tate song.  City of God director Fernando Meirelles as well as Precious helmer Lee Daniels were previously attached to the biopic.

A Texas-born folk and blues singe first gained fame at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 and the 1968 Big Brother album “Cheap Thrills.” She died of a drug overdose in 1970 at the age of 27.

Dallas Buyers Club scribes Craig Borten and Melissa Wallack are negotiating to rewrite the earlier draft. The film doesn’t yet have a release date, but is slated to begin shooting in the second half of 2015 in Los Angeles and San Francisco, where Joplin began recording songs in 1964.

Vallee’s latest movie, Wild, starring Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern, opens on December 3. He has also finished shooting the romantic drama Demolition, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Naomi Watts and Chris Cooper.
