Joaquin Phoenix to Play Cartoonist John Callahan for Gus Van Sant
Joaquin Phoenix and Gus Van Sant are teaming up again, after working way back on 1995’s To Die For, for Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot, a biopic of controversial cartoonist Joe Callahan.
Callahan became an alcoholic at 12, a drug abuser in his mid-teens and a quadriplegic at the age of 21 after being involved in a car accident while bar hopping with a friend. He managed to rebuild his life to become an envelope-pushing cartoonist, whose work was often published in big name magazines like The New Yorker, Penthouse, Playboy and for 27 years at the Portland newspaper Willamette Week. He died in 2010 at the age of 59.
Robin Williams had been set to bring Callahan’s autobiography Will the Real John Callahan Please Stand Up? to screen back in the 1990s, with Van Sant first approached about directing the project in the early 2000s.
Well, it seems like this one is finally going to get its day. Anonymous Content and Iconoclast are producing the film.
