Hacked documents reportedly reveal Sony and Marvel talked about a Spider-Man and Captain America crossover, as well as plans for an animated Spider-Man comedy from Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

Yep, rumors have circulated about Sony and Marvel working out something when it comes to Spider-Man as well as fans have been pushing for Sony to return Spidey rights to Marvel (although Marvel licensed those rights to Sony years ago), especially in light of Marvel’s plans to adapt the 2006 Civil War storyline from the comics, which key subplot features the budding friendship between Peter Parker and Tony Stark.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Sony and Marvel have discussed Marvel making a Spider-Man trilogy and Sony would maintain creative control over the movies, as well as distribution rights. However, these talks have broken down, so don’t count on a Spidey/Avengers crossover in the near future.

Instead, Sony will be going ahead with other attempts to build its own Spider-Man universe. The studio is considering above mentioned animated comedy that would be produced by the team behind 22 Jump Street and The Lego Movie, as well as previously disclosed Spider-Man spin-offs focused on villain team Sinister Six, a movie about the women in Spidey’s life and super-foe Venom movie.

Looks like Sony has no clue what to do with Spider-Man, and now just throwing ideas at the wall and seeing what sticks.
