Leaked ‘Resurgence’ Set Photos Reveal Frightening New Godzilla Design

Toho’s Own Reboot

The King of the Monsters will be back in this summer’s Godzilla: Resurgence – Toho’s own reboot of the Godzilla franchise – and it looks like he’s had an extreme makeover.

Head and long neck are meant to resemble mushroom cloud and skin to resemble burns from atomic bomb. The 1954 original was doing the same thing.

Godzilla: Resurgence, or Shin Gojira, is scheduled to be released later this year for Japanese audiences. No word yet on the U.S. theatrical release, but given that the film has an English title, there is a good possibility it will come Stateside.

Meanwhile, Legendary will release Godzilla 2, a sequel to the U.S. movie, on June 8th, 2018, followed by Godzilla vs. Kong sometime in 2020. Check out the leaked images of Toho’s upcoming production in the gallery viewer below.

Acclaimed writer/director Hideaki Anno (Neon Genesis Evangelion) and special effects director extraordinaire Shinji Higuchi (Attack on Titan, FX for the Gamera Trilogy) team up for the latest incarnation of Godzilla from Toho.

With an overhauled production team, these filmmakers will combine their impressive talents to call back Godzilla’s most frightening atomic roots and, “deliver the greatest and worst nightmare to everyone.”

Directed by Hideaki Anno, Shinji Higuchi, written by Hideaki Anno and starring Hiroki Hasegawa, Yutaka Takenouchi, Satomi Ishihara, Godzilla: Resurgence releases July 29th, 2016.
