LOOPER Director Rian Johnson to Write, Direct STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII

The Internet beats Disney/Lucasfilm to the punch: Deadline and The Wrap are reporting that Looper writer/director Rian Johnson is expected to be announced as the writer and director of Star Wars Episode VIII and that he will write a treatment for Star Wars: Episode IX as well.Frankly, I prefer him more than JJ Abrams and I think he will do a terrific job.

Johnson is the latest director to come on to Lucasfilm/Disney’s revival of Star Wars with Josh Trank (Fantastic Four) and Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) set to helm spinoff films.

For those who are worried about the fact that there are going to be so many different writers and directors involved in this trilogy, different directors has been tradition for the original series: Star Wars is directed by George Lucas, The Empire Strikes Back is directed by Irvin Kershner and Star Wars – Return of the Jedi directed Richard Marquand.

So that’s all good. Johnson himself tweeted a brief tongue-in-cheek movie clip from The Right Stuff after reports first broke. Looper producer Ram Bergman will reportedly also produce Johnson’s Star Wars movie. Lucasfilm could be making the official announcement any moment.
