Marvel Announces New Female THOR

UPDATE: Even Avengers director Joss Whedon has reacted to the introduction of a female Thor in a new storyline. See his tweet below.

No, the God of Thunder wasn’t getting a sex change and wouldn’t be the first trans-gender super hero, but yes, the new Thor comic will star a female Thor.ABC’s The View moderator Whoopi Goldberg first dropped the news that the hammer-wielding Norse God of Thunder, would now be a woman:

“It’s a huge day in the Marvel Universe. Thor, the God of Thunder, he messed up, and he’s no longer worthy to hold that damn hammer of his. For the first time in history, that hammer is being held by a woman. That’s right. Thor is a woman!”

She’ll appear as the titular character of the relaunched, Thor series, debuting in October, written by current Thor writer Jason Aaron and with artwork from current Cyclops artist Russell Dauterman, which means the end of the current Thor: God of Thunder series by writer Jason Aaron and artist Esad Ribic. Aaron contributed with this to say:

“This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.”

Nah, Thor has lost his hammer a few times. A dinosaur-alien called Beta-Ray Bill as well as Captain America, and even Wonder Woman have at one point also taken up Mjolnir.

The original son of Odin will continue to operate in the Marvel Universe, now wielding a battle-axe Jarnbjorn instead of Mjolnir (which he used back in his younger days), so Chris Hemsworth still has a job.

Check out a grumpy-looking Thunder God wielding his magical god-slaying ax.

“A female Thor? What the hell makes them think THAT would be cool?”

Whedon joked and attached an image of Battlestar Galactica‘s Katee Sackhoff (played Starbuck in the television series between 2003 and 2009).

The original Thor will next appear in the Marvel Studios Avengers sequel, Age of Ultron, with Chris Hemsworth taking up the role once again. (He’ll manage to keep the hammer and just swing his trademark weapon from Norse mythology to solve things through calling down lightning).

Marvel is excited to announce an all-new era for the God of Thunder in brand new series, THOR, written by Jason Aaron (Thor: God of Thunder, Original Sin) complimented with art from Russell Dauterman (Cyclops).

This October, Marvel Comics evolves once again in one of the most shocking and exciting changes ever to shake one of Marvel’s “big three” – Captain American, Iron Man and Thor – Marvel Comics will be introducing an all-new THOR, GOD OF THUNDER. No longer is the classic male hero able to hold the mighty hammer, Mjölnir, a brand new female hero will emerge who will be worthy of the name THOR. Who is she? Where did she come from and what is her connection to Asgard and the Marvel Universe?

“The inscription on Thor’s hammer reads ‘Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.’ Well it’s time to update that inscription,” says Marvel editor Wil Moss. “The new Thor continues Marvel’s proud tradition of strong female characters like Captain Marvel, Storm, Black Widow and more. And this new Thor isn’t a temporary female substitute – she’s now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!”

THOR is the latest in the ever-growing and long list of female-centric titles that continues to invite new readers into the Marvel Universe. This female THOR is the 8th title to feature a lead female protagonist and aims to speak directly to an audience that long was not the target for Super Hero comic books in America: women and girls.

Female Thor will probably be pretty cool. Here’s image of her, plus the cover image. Click on them to enlarge.
