Marvel’s Spider-Man Reboot to Be Released in 3D IMAX

The $4 Billion Franchise

The Wrap first broke the news that Sony’s highly-anticipated Spider-Man reboot has been set for a release in IMAX theaters along with the tentpole’s new worldwide date on July 7, 2017.

The movie, which Sony Pictures is teaming with Marvel Studios to produce, will also be digitally re-mastered into the IMAX 3D format.

No doubt Sony is hoping that they can bring the franchise back in a big way. I really wish 3D would go away because no other movie has benefited from the traditional IMAX format other than Gravity and Avatar. The IMAX format is stunning on it’s own and 3D effects quite often detracts from the scope of the film and can actually be a hindrance. I hope they don’t mess it up.

The next installment in the $4 billion franchise was originally supposed to release on July 28, 2017, but when Star Wars: Episode VIII was moved out of its Memorial Day weekend frame to its pre-Christmas 2017 weekend, pulling Pirates 5 off of July 7, Spider-Man took over the new summer date.

The new standalone Spidey film, which stars Tom Holland as the web-slinging hero and Marisa Tomei as Aunt May will be directed by Jon Watts and produced by Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal.
