Melissa Benoist is CBS’ Supergirl

Supergirl TV Series

The “Glee” and Whiplash star Melissa Benoist has been cast as Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El in CBS’ new “Supergirl” television series.

Benoist beat out several other contenders, including ” The Vampire Diaries” star Claire Holt, UK soap star Gemma Atkinson and Once Upon a Time‘s Elizabeth Lail.

The Greg Berlanti (“Arrow,” “The Flash”) and Ali Adler (“No Ordinary Family”) pilot drama is based on the DC Comics character Kara Zor-El aka Kara Danvers, born on the planet Krypton and escaped amid its destruction years ago. An early character breakdown, originally posted by TVLine, revealed that:

“after repressing said skills for more than a decade, Kara is forced to bust out her super moves in public during an unexpected disaster. Energized by her heroism for the first time in her life, she begins embracing her abilities in the name of helping the people of her city, earning herself a super moniker along the way.”

Benoist took to Twitter to express her excitement, tweeting:

Well…she’s def got a super smile.

Her credits also include roles on CBS’ “Blue Bloods” and “The Good Wife” as well as Showtime’s “Homeland“.

The superhero shows are popular because of the movie hits that keep on coming, but just to be clear, this won’t have anything to do with Man of Steel and the WB/DC Universe.
