The 2002 indie mega-hit My Big Fat Greek Wedding sequel is finally in the works. Gold Circle, Playtone and HBO Films have begun developing the comedy follow-up with Nia Vardalos and John Corbett set to return.

Vardalos who also scripted the original film is planning to direct this time and she will be writing the next installment too.

In the wake of Kim Kardashian & Kanye West’s wedding, Vardalos confirmed the sequel news on her Twitter page:

“I’m working on a MBFGWedding sequel. Now that I’m experiencing motherhood, I feel ready to write this next chapter.” She added, “Of course a few jaded folk in the press corps will claim I ran out of money or just want to kiss John Corbett again. One of these things is true.”

A Greek Wedding sequel will reportedly follow the reveal of a Portokalos family secret and a new wedding, described as bigger and fatter, that brings the Greek clan together again.

Sadly, the box office receipts now have been wildly different than that of 2002 and the dismal box-office numbers, regarding any romantic comedy with a female lead, reflect that. Moreover, Vardalos’ career has stagnated, and a sequel to the only movie that really made money seems to smack of desperation.

Greek Wedding is still one of my family’s favorite movies and I hope it will be better than stupid show that they tried to make (titled My Big Fat Greek Life, the show debuted shortly after the movie, with Vardalos back as the lead and it only ran for a couple of episodes before getting cancelled).
