NANNY MCPHEE Helmer to Direct MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING Sequel for Universal

Announced earlier this year, My Big Fat Greek Wedding sequel is officially in the works at Universal with Nanny McPhee and What to Expect When You’re Expectin director Kirk Jones on board to helm the film, which sees the return of star Nia Vardalos, who also wrote the script.

Vardalos as Toula and John Corbett as her husband, Ian return for a story in which a family secret and an even bigger wedding brings the Portokalos family together for another go-around.

Hollywood truly won’t let pretty much anything die, and especially in the case of MBFGW now that the dust has settled around the profit sharing lawsuits from the first film. The 2002 film earned $368 million worldwide and spawned a CBS sitcom spinoff that failed as well as Vardalos’ other films, Connie and Carla, My Life in Ruins, and I Hate Valentine’s Day.

Without a doubt, Vardolas was very lucky that Tom Hanks is Greek Orthodox. Yep, Hanks and his Playtone partner Gary Goetzman are producing with Rita Wilson.

Anyway, this is good news for people who enjoy simplistic plots and ethnic stereotypes. Yes, I admit it, I am one of them. And I’ll give you more on this story as it develops.
