Nathan Fillion, famed for his role as Captain Malcolm Reynolds on the short-lived space western TV show Firefly (created by Joss Whedon) will appear in upcoming Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

However, the rumors of Castle star being cast as Richard Rider, aka Nova, in the film’s post-credits sequence, have been entirely exaggerated.

Director James Gunn has denied speculation of Fillion playing Nova via his Tweeter:

But Gunn swiftly revealed that Fillion (who featured in his previous films Slither and Super) will have a cameo in the film:

The actor, most beloved of movie geeks, was reported to be in the running for the role of Star-Lord before Chris Pratt was cast.

Popular fan theories are that he will voice Cosmo (the Russian dog who lives at Knowhere in Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning’s Guardians of the Galaxy comics), or that he will make an uncredited appearance as Mal Reynolds (his character from Whedon’s Firefly and Serenity). Spoilers ahead:

“In an alternate universe, Fillion’s cameo takes place in an alien bar. Peter Quill passes him, cooly saying, “Hey, Mal, good to see you.” Mal replies in kind and the audience literally dies because there’s nothing else to live for after that moment.”

Whatever kind of role he plays, we’ll have to wait until Guardians is released in theaters on August 1.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits–Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand – with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is presented by Marvel Studios and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gilian, Djimon Hounsou with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Commander Rael, Benicio del Toro as The Collector and Josh Brolin as Thanos.
