Neill Blomkamp to Direct New ‘RoboCop’
Neill Blomkamp, director of sci-fi hits District 9, Elysium and Chappie, is set to direct a new RoboCop installment for MGM titled RoboCop Returns, which will reportedly follow the Paul Verhoeven’s original 1987 film and ignore the José Padilha’s 2014 reboot.
Justin Rhodes, a co-writer on Tim Miller’s upcoming Terminator sequel, is rewriting an old spec script that was written by original screenwriters Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner shortly after the original’s release. The duo will produce and executive-produce, respectively.
Returns will be set in crime-ridden Detroit and center around the cyborg as he is forced to come back to the city and save it from the brink of anarchy. Let’s hope Blomkamp does the original film justice.
Deadline first broke the news.
