Netflix Backs Bong Joon-ho’s Monster Pic ‘Okja’

Gyllenhaal And Dano And Swinton

Streaming video service Netflix and Brad Pitt‘s Plan B production company have joined as backers of Bong Joon-ho‘s monster feature Okja; Netflix is investing, Plan B is co-producing.

That’s very good news for Korean film fans. The upcoming creature feature from The Host and Snowpiercer filmmaker has already lined up a very impressive cast, with Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Dano, Bill Nighy and Kelly MacDonald. Auditions are now underway for their Korean cast mates.

“It really is a fantastic opportunity for me as a filmmaker,” said Bong in a statement. “For Okja, I needed a bigger budget than I had for Snowpiercer and also complete creative freedom. Netflix offered me the two conditions that are difficult to have in hand simultaneously.”

Okja will revolve around a country girl and her friendship with the titular animal. Production is reportedly slated to begin in Korea and New York next April for a 2017 release. I really hope it won’t bomb like Beasts of No Nation.
