New JUMP STREET Film in the Works; Rodney Rothman Set to Script

There was little doubt that there could be another sequel to 22 Jump Street – the tenth highest earner of the year  and one of the most successful comedy franchises of all time – and that’s the news I have for you.

According to Deadline Hollywood, Sony Pictures and Original Film are officially moving forward on third film in the action comedy series and 22 Jump Street co-writer Rodney Rothman has been hired to write the script for 23 Jump Street, while Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are attached as producers and will oversee the story.

I really hope those two guys will direct this one as well, but it’s not clear if they will return behind the camera for this outing. Their The Lego Movie is also one of the best of the year, you know.

Lord, Miller and Rothman are currently working at Fox on a reboot of the Greatest American Hero TV show, so it’s possible the first two will elect to handoff directing responsibilities on 23 Jump Street to someone else.

The series’ lead Channing Tatum and co-star/co-writer Jonah Hill will also serve as producers alongside Neal Moritz, Rothman, Lord and Miller. They are expected to return for the third film, of course and I’m wondering if they will go to medical school as in the tease from the last sequel’s end credits.

The potential Schmidt and Jenko scenarios seems endless: Maybe they’ll do a prequel or maybe they’ll go the Jurassic World approach: “21 Jump City”…  “Jump Galaxy” is also a good idea or a crossover between 21 Jump Street and The Lego Movie….errr, and… um, The Rock is in it too.
