New ‘Power Rangers’ Movie Casts Black Ranger

Saban Entertainment+s Reboot

Lionsgate and Saban Entertainment have tapped another relative newcomer to play the key team member for their upcoming Power Rangers movie.

Ludi Lin has signed on as Zack, a.k.a. the Black Ranger, joining the previously announced Naomi Scott as the Pink Ranger and Dacre Montgomery as the Red Ranger.

The lesser known Asian-American actor was not mentioned in a Variety report from earlier this month (as well as Montgomery), but he ended up beating out candidates such as Daniel Zovatto, Ross Butler and Brian “Sene” Marc, who were all rumored to be up for the part.

Check out the Tweet from the official Power Ranger Twitter page promoting the movie:

Well, they better make the Yellow Ranger black then. I hope an African American actor won’t become the nerdy Blue Ranger. Just kidding, you can change anyone’s race now, and it’s cool.

Set to be directed by Project Almanac‘s Dean Israelite, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers reboot opens in U.S. theaters on January 13th, 2017. Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller wrote the script.

After 10,000 years of imprisonment, the evil sorceress Rita Repulsa and her loyal minions are freed when astronauts on a routine mission in space accidentally open her dumpster prison on the Moon. A team of “five teenagers with attitude” — Jason, Zack, Kimberly, Billy and Trini — receive superpowers beyond their wildest dreams so they can defend the Earth as the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
