New ‘Power Rangers’ Movie Casts Red Ranger

New Power Rangers Movie

According to the movie’s official Twitter account, the upcoming Power Rangers reboot has found its Red Ranger in newcomer Dacre Montgomery. The unknown actor joins a cast that includes Naomi Scott as the Pink Ranger.

His casting however was a bit of a surprise – to say the least – his name was not mentioned among the contenders for the role of Jason, a.k.a. The Red Ranger on the recently rumored Power Rangers short list. With only two other roles to his credit (a 2010 short film Betrand the Terrible and 2010’s Family Tree TV movie), Montgomery has been picked out to play the lead role in the movie. No comment, literally.

The film is described as a modern reinvention of the long-running Power Rangers franchise. In it, a group of high school kids find themselves infused with extraterrestrial powers and unite to save the world with the aid of giant mechanical vehicles known as Zords.

Set to be directed by Dean Israelite (Project Almanac) from a script by Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz (X:Men: First Class), Lionsgate‘s Power Rangers reboot will begin filming in January 2016, so we should hear more about the rest of these main cast members very soon. Well at least we will get better visuals than the last two PR movies.

The film is scheduled for release on January 13, 2017.
