Oscars VFX Shortlist: ‘Star Wars’, ‘Mad Max’, ‘Jurassic World’ and More

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced on Monday the preliminary shortlist of movies that will be considered for this year’s Best Visual Effects nomination.

The blockbusters absent from the list include Cinderella, Crimson Peak, Pan, The Fantastic Four, and San Andreas. Vying alongside the high-profile films are smaller ones including Ex Machina and Chappie as well as the big box office whiffs, Tomorrowland and Jupiter Ascending.

The selection of 20 films (the maximum number allowed for the VFX shortlist) includes seven of the 10 domestic top-grossing films of 2015. Star Wars: The Force Awakens, In the Heart of the Sea and The Revenant are three films that have not yet been released stateside.

The movies up for the VFX award are:

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2
In the Heart of the Sea
Jupiter Ascending
Jurassic World
Mad Max: Fury Road
The Martian
Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation
The Revenant
Spectre
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Terminator Genisys
Tomorrowland
The Walk

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Mad Max: Fury Road and The Martian are the leading contenders, as noted on the Gold Derby website. Very preliminary though, this is a tough field. The final five nominees will be unveiled on January 14, 2016 at 5:30 a.m. PST.
