PACIFIC RIM 2 is Officially Happening!

The Pacific Rim 2 movie is officially happening, plus there’ll be an animated series and a continuation of the Pacific Rim: Tales from Year Zero prequel graphic novel.

Earlier this month director Guillermo del Tor has teased that he was writing a script for the film with Zak Penn and now the filmmaker has announced that the sequel to 2013 robots vs. aliens spectacle has finally been green-lit by Legendary Pictures and the pic will hit theaters on April 7, 2017 in IMAX 3D.

Original movie writer Travis Beacham is still involved in some capacity and Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni  again produce alongside del Toro, Mary Parent and Callum Greene, while Jillian Share will exec produce.

It’s a long way off, but hopefully the wait will be worth it.

Del Toro told BuzzFeed on Thursday:

“The characters I love will return. Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau – but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we’re ready to have a blast.”

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the sequel will follow on from the events of the first movie, and will focus on original heroes Raleigh Becket and Mako Mori, Jaegar pilots portrayed by Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi in the first film.

The Oscar-nominated filmmaker will start working on Pacific Rim 2 as he finishes post-production on the horror film Crimson Peak, which Universal opens on October 16, 2015. The Pacific Rim sequel will also be released by Universal, which is now distributing all of Legendary’s pics.

Check out his taped message to fans via Legendary’s YouTube channel.

Basically, Del Toro can open up your wallet any time he’d like.
