PACIFIC RIM 2 Script Underway by Guillermo del Toro & Zak Penn

Despite the original sci-fi adventure had less than stellar US run, Pacific Rim 2 is still happening.  Guillermo del Toro said he is currently at work on a script for  follow-up to his latest movie with Zak Penn who had a hand in the likes of The Avengers, Incredible Hulk and X-Men movies.

While promoting his new series The Strain at the Austin TV Fest, del Toro told BuzzFeed that he’s working on the sequel script – but not with original scribe Travis Beacham anymore – with the belief that, if the film has been given the green light by Legendary Pictures, he’ll get to shoot it.

“I’m working very, very hard with Zak Penn. We’ve been working for a few months now in secret. We found a way to twist it around. Travis Beacham was involved in the storyline and now I’m writing with Zak because Travis has become a TV mogul.”

“Some people were wondering if we were going to do the prequel. I was never interested in doing that first wave of invasion,”

he said.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the current version of the script reportedly includes  Raleigh Becket and Mako Mori, Jaegar pilots  portrayed by Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi in the first film.

“I’m going for very new, very crazy ideas on the second one, which are very different from the first one — but you will get really great spectacle,”

Del Toro said confirming that the follow-up will in fact be a sequel, and not a prequel.

I hope  he will bring out the best in Penn to overcome his occasionally clunky dialogue in English.  I think Mexican filmmaker was at his best in Spanish, in films such as The Devil’s Backbone (2001) or Pan’s Labyrinth (2006).
