‘Pacific Rim 2’ Starts Shooting, John Boyega Confirms Title

Pacific Rim 2 Starts Shooting

Yup, looks like Universal and Legendary’s long-awaited sequel to Pacific Rim is stepping into the vortex.

The sequel’s director Steven DeKnight and star John Boyega both announced that filming is underway, and confirmed that the movie’s official title is Pacific Rim: Maelstrom.

Boyega stars in the film as the son of Idris Elba’s Stacker Pentecost alongside Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny, Jing Tian and Levi Meaden, while Guillermo del Toro previously teased “a lot of the cast from the first movie is coming back” (such as Ron Perlman, Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi and Burn Gorman). However, due to scheduling conflicts Charlie Hunnam won’t be back.

Del Toro isn’t directing Maelstrom either, but the new action adventure Pacific Rim is based on a concept he created with the original screenwriter Travis Beacham with a script by Derek Connolly, offering up a fresh look at the popular genres of giant robots and kaiju by pitting them against each other. Motives and other matters of plot are still under wraps, but it is definitely a sequel.

First day on Pacific Rim today. Here's to a great adventure ahead ✌🏿
