Phil Lord and Chris Miller to Helm Han Solo Spin-Off Movie

Young Han Solo Star Wars Spin-Off

Disney and Lucasfilm have tapped The LEGO Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller to write and direct a young Han Solo Star Wars spin-off film.

A Star Wars Anthology spin-off film centered on a younger smuggler, will reportedly be their next effort behind the camera. The Hollywood Reporter mentions that,

They were to develop a Flash feature for Warners as a directing vehicle but now with the untitled Star Wars spin-off, that is likely off the table.”

Ah, Disney once again pissing on WB/DC’s party. Nevermind, let the dreamcasting begin. Here’s what Miller and Lord had to say about their involvement with the project:

This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with. We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.”

The screenplay is penned by Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back) and his son Jon Kasdan (The First Time) and focuses on how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley. Anyone interested in Solo’s earlier years?

Slated for a May 25th, 2018 release, it seems like this is indeed the movie which Josh Trank was set to direct. Let’s get it started people! Earlier today we learned that Darth Vader will appear in Rogue One, the first Star Wars stand-alone movie. The power of the Force is coming to San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, July 10.
