Pilou Asbæk to Join Scarlett Johansson’s ‘Ghost in the Shell’

Pilou Asbæk Co-Starring

Update: Per Variety, Sam Riley (On the Road) is also in talks to board the DreamWorks’ project. He could be an upper-tier henchman or the big bad.

Pilou Asbæk will join Scarlett Johansson in upcoming Ghost in the Shell, the Rupert Sanders‘ live-action adaptation of the popular Japanese manga created by Masamune Shirow.

The up-and-coming Danish actor, who previously appeared with Johansson in the film Lucy, will play Batou, the best fighter in the Section and Major Motoko Kusanagi’s (Johansson) second-in-command. Both will lead Section 9 against The Laughing Man and his attempts to undo Hanka’s cybernetic advancements in cyber technology.

Well if they’re going to keep the character names the same and if the cast is predominantly non-Asian, I think it’s safe to say that this is stupid.

The Bill Wheeler-scripted film, which has been a passion project for DreamWorks principal Steven Spielberg is scheduled for a March 31st, 2017 release. Most recently, Straight Outta Compton‘s Jonathan Herman was hired to rewrite the Ghost in the Shell film.

Asbæk will soon be seen as Pontius Pilate in MGM’s remake of Ben-Hur and is also set to play Euron Greyjoy in the upcoming season of HBO’s “Game of Thrones”.
