Pixar Reveals ‘Cars 3’ New Character

Pixar's Anthropomorphic Franchise

Disney and Pixar have revealed the first details about Cars 3 along with the first piece of concept art from the film.

The next Cars movie, coming to theaters on June 16, 2017, will feature Cruz Ramirez, a young Hispanic female racer. Director Brian Fee says…

“Cruz Ramirez is trying to figure out how this old dog can learn some new tricks..Think of where he’d be in his career now in real time. (McQueen) is not an old man, but he’s one of the older cars on the circuit with new rookies coming in. People start to wonder and ask when he might retire.”

The primary antagonist will be Jackson Storm, who soundly defeats Lightning.

“Jackson Storm is the face of these rookies who have come onto the scene. And McQueen is in a position where his entire racing generation is being pushed out. But it’s too early to be shown the door right now.”

Owen Wilson is back voicing Lightning McQueen but no casting has yet been announced for the new characters. Returning voice actors also include Larry the Cable Guy (Mater), Bonnie Hunt (Sally Carrera), and Cheech Marin (Ramone).

Concept art of Ramirez (yellow) going for a run on the beach with McQueen can be seen below. They prepare for the Florida 500, which is the film’s equivalent of the Daytona 500.

I’m not a big fan of Pixar’s anthropomorphic Cars franchise to be honest, but it does seem interesting that Lightning will be promoted back to protagonist after Mater stepped in five years ago. Happy 10th anniversary to the original movie by the way.
