R.I.P. David Bowie (1947 – 2016)

Rest In Peace

Film Cutting would like to pay respects to legendary artist David Bowie, who has passed away in the early hours of the morning, just three days after his 69th birthday. Below is an official release by his family from his Facebook page.

“January 10 2016 – David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.”

Bowie had just released his new album Blackstar and the below music video for “Lazarus.” He also had a huge film presence as an actor in such films as Labyrinth, The Man Who Fell to Earth, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, The Hunger and appearances in The Last Temptation of Christ, The Prestige, Bandslam and Zoolander. He is survived by his wife Iman, his son Duncan and his daughter, Alexandria Zahra Jones.

For anyone who hasn’t seen the music video for “Lazarus,” it’s him in a hospital bed singing about death, before clambering into a darkened closet dressed in one of his costumes from the 70s:

Only Bowie would turn his own imminent death into a piece of performance art.
