Rami Malek to Play Freddie Mercury in Long-Gestating Queen Biopic
According to Deadline Hollywood, Emmy winner and “Mr. Robot” star Rami Malek has signed on to play the iconic Queen front man in the long-gestating Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, potentially directed by X-Men franchise helmer Bryan Singer.
The Theory of Everything writer Anthony McCarten penned the latest version of the screenplay for the project backed by 20th Century Fox with Graham King and GK Film producing. Brian May and Roger Taylor from Queen will serve as music producers.
The project was originally set up at Sony Pictures with Sacha Baron Cohen set to play the singer, but he reportedly dropped out because the film was going in a direction that was more about than band than Freddie himself. He has the look, but I never quite pictured Sacha in the role. I guess I can kind of picture Rami as Freddie Mercury.
Bohemian Rhapsody is aiming to begin production in early 2017. I wish they would tell Freddie’s real life story. Good luck Rami, let’s see you shine.
