Ridley Scott to Direct THE MARTIAN Starring Matt Damon

Ridley Scott is reportedly in talks to direct 20th Century Fox’s The Martian, which already has Matt Damon attached to star.

Cabin in the Woods director Drew Goddard had to exit the sci-fi project about a month ago due to his commitment to directing Sony’s The Sinister Six, the planned Spider-Man spinoff.book-the-martian

Goddard finished the script based on the self published book by Andy Weir that follows an endlessly resourceful astronaut stuck in a martian colony who’s trying to survive while NASA tries to mount a rescue operation.

Scott would still be working from Goddard’s script and it’ll be nice to see what he can do in this space-based tale being described as a mix of Apollo 13 and Cast Away.

Since Prometheus 2 is already slated to begin this fall, with a projected release date of March 2016, it’s not clear how soon The Martian will get off the ground.

Here’s the short book description:

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.

Now, he’s sure he’ll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won’t have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old “human error” are much more likely to kill him first.

But Mark isn’t ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?
