Robert Rodriguez Set to Direct JONNY QUEST at Warner Bros

Johnny Quest Adaptation

Sin City 2 and Machete Kills director Robert Rodriguez has joined Warner Bros.’ live-action adaptation of the Hanna-Barbera cartoon Jonny Quest, according to Deadline.

The most successful U.S. Latino filmmaker will be teaming with Terry Rossio (Pirates of the Caribbean) on the script, the most recent draft of which was written by Dan Mazeau.

Check out the storyline of the original cartoon in the vein of “Doc Savage, Tom Swift, and John Carter of Mars”:

Dr. Benton Quest is a research scientist who is frequently called upon for missions that require his scientific and technical expertise. He is usually accompanied by his son Jonny, his tutor/bodyguard Race Bannon, their bulldog with the distinctive mask-like eye markings named Bandit, and Hadji, an Indian orphan who has special abilities of his own. Together, they investigate mysteries, perform rescues and battle nefarious villains around the world, most notably Dr. Zin.

The plot details are unknown, but the Mazeau’s draft that hit the Black List had a simple logline:

Young Jonny Quest travels the world with his scientist father, adopted brother from India, Bandit the bulldog, and a government agent assigned to protect them while they investigate scientific mysteries.

Previous attempts to adapt Jonny Quest for the big screen included a Zac EfronDwayne Johnson starring film, directed by Peter Segal, but the project went into stasis.

Apart from his R-rated fare, Rodriguez has shown a proficiency in making kids films with the four-installment “Spy Kids” series, but Quest will mark his first foray into big-budget filmmaking territory. Umm, this will hopefully be Raiders of the Lost Ark for kids rather than The Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls for kids.
