Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Ruth Negga Cast as Tulip in AMC’s PREACHER

AMC Pilot Drama

UPDATE: Deadline has another story. The upcoming television adaptation of Vertigo Comics series has set Ian Colletti (Jimmy) to play the supporting character Arseface (aka Eugene Root) opposite Ruth Negga’s Tulip O’Hare.

Deadline reports that “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” actress Ruth Negga is the first actor to be cast in AMC’s pilot order for “Preacher,” the show based on Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s comic books.

The actress who played the Girl in the Flower Dress throughout “S.H.I.E.L.D.”‘s sophomore season is now cast to play Tulip, the female lead in “Preacher,” a potential series about a maverick clergyman in Texas. Very funny indeed.

Her new flower-themed character is described as “a volatile, action-packed, sexified force of nature, a capable, unrepentant criminal with a love of fashion and ability to construct helicopter-downing bazookas out of coffee cans and corn shine who’s not afraid to steal, kill or corn cob-stab her way out of a bad situation.”

Um…sounds romantic but it’s really not. I think she’s just a badass.

“Preacher,” published by DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint between 1995 and 2000, tells the story of Reverend Jesse Custer, a small town Texas preacher who, nearly at his faith’s end, finds himself merged with a supernatural entity, Genesis, birthed from both an angel and a demon. Imbued with the word of God (the ability to make anyone obey his commands), Jesse hits the road, reunited with his ex girlfriend, Tulip, and joined by a rowdy Irish vampire, Cassidy, to track down God himself and force him to explain why he abandoned his duties in Heaven.

The pilot was penned by “Breaking Bad” veteran Sam Catlin and has Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg attached to helm. Dominic Cooper‘s name has been rumored for Custer, but no official announcement has been made. The first episode is set to shoot this summer for series consideration in 2016.

Tulip O'Hare Jesse Custer

Another funny coincidence appears: Tulip O’Hare is a blond Irish-American woman in the comic, and the best option for the character is a brunette Ethopian-Irish actress.
