Ryan Coogler in Talks to Direct Marvel’s ‘Black Panther’

Creed helmer Ryan Coogler is reportedly in talks to direct Marvel’s upcoming Black Panther movie featuring Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, the first black superhero.

Birthmoviesdeath.com (by Devin Faraci) first reported the news, which was later confirmed by Variety.

Creed looks pretty good, so this is a good look for Marvel. Between him and Ava Duvernay, who passed on the Marvel film earlier this year, I do think he’s the better choice. F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton) was also in contention before signing on to direct Furious 8. Marvel, like every company with established characters, has restrictions and they want pawns they can control.

On the other hand, Coogler has become one of Hollywood’s hottest young directors so Marvel better hurry before it’s too late. The 29-year-old indie filmmaker also made the successful vault with 2013’s Fruitvale Station, which won him the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature.

Whatever the case, the comic book character, via Boseman, will make his debut in next summer’s Captain America: Civil War. Black Panther movie is currently scheduled for a July 6, 2018 release and it’s unclear what other characters will appear in the film. Only time will tell, so stay tuned.
